Gymnasium-- biding time (open)

[Sam Tan]

Sam watched the magic bubble from her blackened fingertips, forming tiny pearls of swirling, smoky light that fizzled and dissolved into sparks as she flicked them into the air. It was dinnertime, and Sam was glad for the brief span of quiet.

She sent out another volley of sparks, and smiled at the static hum that hung in the air for several moments after the magic ceased. She was beginning to feel that same static in her forearms and palms, a regular side effect of using her powers.

"Don't start doing that, now," she mumbled as she rubbed her wrists.

Tebryn heard the familiar crackles and pops of his big sister's magic being used. Given the lack of muffled explosions afterward, he assumed she was doing her spark trick again.

When he followed the sounds and peered into the gym, he saw he was correct. His brow furrowed when she rubbed her wrists.

"Are they hurting?"

Sam looked up sharply at the sound of another voice. She relaxed when she saw Tebryn's lean figure silhouetted in the open doorway. "Just a little." She quirked her lips to one side and beckoned for him to join her.

"Not hungry either, eh?"

Tebryn shook his head and loped forward to join her at the bottom row of the bleachers. He offered her a smile, visible more in his eyes than his lips.

"I haven't really been craving regular food the past couple days." He adjusted the collar of his shirt and grumbled. "I've been, uh..." He blushed. "Taken care of."

Sam felt a smirk curling across her face. She reached up to ruffle his hair and tried her hardest to bite back a chuckle.

"Are we ever gonna meet the girl?" She nudged him with her elbow and gave him a sly look. "Or am I going to have to gather our brothers and stage a reconnaissance mission? We can always follow you on one of your dates and get the details ourselves."

Tebryn ducked his head and chewed on his lower lip as heat radiated from his cheeks. "Alright." He sighed heavily through his nose. "What will it take for that not to happen?"

Sam turned on the bench to face him and set her elbows on her knees.

"Details," she demanded. She poked his arm and grinned. "Her name, how you guys met, what she's like."

After a moment of watching his blush deepen, she added, "And if I think you're lying, I'm shaving your head while you sleep tonight."

Tebryn stared at his sister.

"Her... name is..." Blink. "Daisy."

He ran a hand through his hair, wondering if it was worth risking the repercussions to making up further details.

"We met at the market. I kinda... dumped a pile of books on her. On accident, or course. One of them got gored on her antlers."

Sam snorted.  "You dumped a ton of books on her and got a date."

She watched her brother for a long moment, and when he didn't waver she rested her chin on her fist.

"Uh-huh.  I'll bite.  So she has antlers.  What does she look like?"

Tebryn grumbled. "About five-two. Black hair. The kind of cute that makes you feel guilty for things you had absolutely no hand in."

"And the antlers. They're, uh... they're pretty sharp." He pursed his lips slightly. "Are we done? Can we change the subject?"

Sam arched one eyebrow as she listened. "So did her antlers make those marks on your shoulders, or her nails?"

"Not quite. You still haven't told me what Miss Daisy is like."

Tebryn's ears burned. "Mn." Sam could figure out the answer to that one her own damn self.

"She's affectionate," he mumbled. "And very bubbly. A little aggressive, but she's not mean." He stopped, thinking. "I like her. A lot. I'm just getting to know her more before exposing her to our crazy family, okay?"

Sam's expression softened and she reached out to once more to ruffle the lad's hair. He seemed legitimately worried at the idea of messing up this budding relationship. Or at the very least at the idea of his idiot siblings scaring the girl away.

"Alright, I'm satisfied." She offered him a smile. "Don't worry your pretty head, Tey. We won't hunt her down if you don't want us to."

"Though I know that I would, at some point, appreciate the opportunity to meet the tiny antlered hellion that's keeping my incubus baby brother well enough fed that he doesn't need to supplement with a human diet."

Tebryn started to smile in response, but her last comment had him pulling his knees to his chest and draping his arms over his head.

"Noona. Seriously."
