Singing like nobody's listening
Vincent loved days like this. The sun was shining, the weather was warm enough for him to keep his window open, he had free time enough to slip into the music room, play the piano and sing for all the castle to hear... Just lovely. Right now he had Phantom on the brain, and on his tongue as well. Such a shame Ariel wasn't here to sing duets with him anymore. But he couldn't blame her for moving on after graduation. So, "Music of the Night" it was.

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
There were very few circumstances under which it made sense to Peace to be in school when he didn't have to, but the acoustics in a magic castle were pretty amazing. There were a couple of hallways and staircases in particular where music became haunting and ethereal, and a strangely muted spot where he could hook up an electric guitar and get some really nice sludge riffs.
Today, though, before he could find a nice place to settle down with his flute, someone else's music echoes down the halls. Piano, specifically. Something from Phantom of the Opera.
Peace recognized the music teacher's tastes, and wasn't sure he should intrude, but his feet carried him that way anyway. The guy was good.

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
"Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world! Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before!" Vincent didn't need sheet music for this, nor just about every other song from Phantom. He'd had them all memorized for decades. He could see the door from his seat on the piano bench, and curiosity rippled through him as it swung open, but he didn't miss a beat. "Let your soul take you where you long to BE!"
As his last note echoed, he smiled at the man on the threshold, then ended the refrain. "Only then can you belong to me."
He chuckled and switched over to speaking, but still lingered for a moment in the Phantom's persona. "Monsieur, I bid you welcome. What can I do for you?"

"Uhm. Hi." Peace grinned awkwardly. "I was just, uh... hopefully nothing involving kidnapping or swordfights." He figured there must be at least one swordfight somewhere in Phantom of the Opera. There had to be.
"I was just passing through, I guess. Having fun?"
Peace was holding his set of pipes.

Vincent grinned and sat back, stretching his arms above his head. "Always. No kidnapping or swordfights around here. Though Diana could instruct you in the latter if you're interested."

Peace's eyes widened and "Okay" slipped out of his mouth before his brain could catch up.
"I mean- uh." This was awkward. Maybe it didn't have to be, though. "...You're a really good pianist, sir. Do you play anything else?"

Vincent smiled. "Thank you. I'm afraid I don't. I took a few flute lessons in my youth, but I preferred piano and voice a great deal more. Anything I learned back then is long forgotten, sadly."

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
A lopsided grin spread over Peace's face. The guy didn't seem all that standoffish or intimidating. Okay, maybe this wouldn't be so weird.
"Well, I came here to practice... and you're really good. Maybe we could, uh, jam together? Or something? I'm not as good with this as you are at the piano, but..."

Vincent's smile turned to a grin again. "I like the way you think. I don't often get asked to collaborate, but it's far too much fun to refuse. Did you have anything in mind? I hope our tastes in music line up."

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
Peace shrugged. "No idea. Is there some classical piece that takes piano and flute? Or I'd be cool with improvising..."

"Hmmm." Vincent thought for a moment, then smiled, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Are you familiar with Heather Dale's 'Changeling Child'?"

Peace tilted his head and thought about that for a second. The name sounded familiar, but that could just be because he'd lived in a weird fairy town for like a year and a half.
"I don't think so, but if you hum a few bars I can fake it...?"

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
Vincent smiled and gladly obliged, singing a cappella.
"The wind blows low and mournful
Through the Strath of Dalnacreich,
Where once there lived a woman
Who would a mother be.
For twelve long years a good man's wife,
But ne'er the cradle filled;
Mother of a changeling child
From 'neath the fairy hill..."
He then launched into the piano interlude, counting the beats until he could start the next verse.

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
Peace listened intently. He was a little nervous; this wasn't how he'd intended to spend his afternoon, but now he was committed to not looking like he didn't know what he was doing.
He started with a low, lilting rhythm, trying to match the tone Vincent put into the song. It seemed a bit slow, and he kept up well enough, even adding a flourish here and there.
It was a creepy song, though. Made him wonder if something weird was going to happen.

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
Korlian had been exploring when the sound of music drifted out a nearby window. Then pipes sounded, and his curiosity went from idle to demanding to be satisfied. He liked the sound; it was soft and mournful and exactly the sort of thing he'd like to play himself. So, he scaled the wall until he sat in the open window, perched much like a cat as he watched the two musicians play.

Vincent sang on, continuing the tale of a mother who had been desperate enough to bargain with the Sidhe for a baby. In the next interlude between verses, he glanced toward a shadow in the window, and smiled in curiosity at the figure perched there. He nodded in greeting without missing a note on the piano, not wanting to disrupt the song; it was quite clear this young man had come to listen, and far be it from him to disappoint.

Korlian frowned slightly. That was significantly less reaction that he had been hoping for. Still, it was interesting music, and he was content to listen.

Re: Singing like nobody's listening
Peace had his eyes closed, focusing on letting the music flow through him and keeping up with the professor. As the song came to a close, he played one last trailing riff and moved the pipes from his lips.
When he opened them, the sight of someone at the window made him jump a bit.
"...Does that make you the drummer?" was the first thing to pop into his head.

Vincent laughed. "He could be! Welcome, monsieur." He smiled at the newcomer again. "You must be Korlian, yes? Lhachlhass' brother." He definitely seemed calmer than the other, if little less unusual in other ways. As if the fact that he'd come in via window wasn't proof enough.

Korlian grinned back, though he remembered to keep it less predatory than his wont. "Yes. I seem to have neglected an area of interest. But there are only so many hours in a day. You know my name; what are yours?"
He glanced between them both to make it clear he was not speaking only to the pianist.

Vincent nodded. "I go by Professor Vincent, mostly. Or Professor V. I stopped with 'Professor Hawk' once there got to be three of us. Far too confusing, especially since we're all family."

"Uh. Peace." Peace waved, an awkward smile on his face. "Nice to meet you I guess."
Lhachlhass. He'd heard that name before. "You go here too, don't you?"

"My brother and I attend classes here, yes. Myself more than he." Korlian shifted so his legs hung inside the room rather than tucked up under him, and leaned forward so in the unlikely event he overbalanced it would be inside and not out.
"Professor Vincent and Peace." He said the names like he was tasting them, or storing them away to examine later, slowly and deliberately.

Vincent nodded. "Is there something specific I can do for you? Or were you just here to listen to the music? We can certainly do more of that if you like. It's half my purpose for being here." He chuckled. "Music teacher and all."
