"If we have any kind of thick bread, I can make a butter spread and then we can toast it. Making it cheesy bread would take no time."

"Cheesy toast it is." He started on washing and chopping veggies.

"So how the hell have you two been, anyway? Classes have been hectic, I've barely seen anybody." Which he was glad of, but whatever. "Especially you," he said while gesturing at Hitoshi with the knife. "Who'd you wind up roomed with again?"

Hitoshi found half a loaf of slightly-stale-but-still-edible bread toward the back of the cupboard, which was essentially the perfect kind of bread for what they hoped to accomplish. It looked like something Rhythan had either baked himself or bought freshly made in the market.

"I'd appreciate it if you kept a safe distance from me with that in your hand," Hitoshi said, his gaze sticking on the knife in Dmitry's hand. "No offense, but I'm not sure I trust you not to stab me." Whether Hitoshi meant accidentally or on purpose, that much he didn't say.

"His name is Jaebi. He's tidy, he keeps his things on his side of the room, he doesn't hog the bathroom, and a month into living with him I haven't walked into him having sex with anyone in my room, so I have have no complaints."

Kazari slid the pizza into the oven and popped the door shut with her hip. She collected a small pan and started melting butter, stirring in herbs and garlic and pepper.

"Jaebi? Big tall guy with the scars? He's in my classes with Professor Oakleigh." Kazari added a touch of lemon juice to the pan and grinned at Thrall.

"Who are you roomed with? If we hadn't been held back, it probably would've been me or Kuma."

Thrall frowned at Hitoshi, then went back to chopping. "Hey, I know my way around a knife. It's not gonna fly off."

"I think I've seen that guy. Doesn't he hang around with Kemekin, that kid with the antlers? Both of them kinda cute?" He grinned at Kazari. "Heh. I wish. Nah, it's one of the Headmistress' kids. The girl, Sam. She's pretty okay, haven't talked to her much but she's not Neylen, so I can't really complain. Didn't you wind up with another one?"

Kazari chuckled and killed the heat to the pan. "Yeah, that's the one."

She nodded. "Yeah, I'm rooming with Tebryn. He doesn't seem to like the arrangement much. Quiet kid."

Kazari blinked. "He's, uh... Yeah-- yeah, I mean, I think so."

She bit her lip, trying to remember something Tebryn had mumbled in response to her "What are you in for?" question.

"He said he's... an Incubus, if I recall."

Thrall hissed in sympathy. "Oof. Yeah. And he's been nice and quiet? No snacking or flirting at all?"

He gave Kazari a pained grin. "No offense, but I wouldn't want to room with your brother once a month. I imagine that kid must spend half his day in the shower."

Hitoshi made a face as he slid the pan into the oven.

"It seems like a bad idea to room an incubus with a female roommate," Hitoshi said. "You'd think someone would have caught that."

Kazari shrugged. "I'm not bothered or anything. Hell, if he tried anything, I'd snap him in half and give the pieces to Kazuo and Gussu to deal with. And he knows that."

"But he's not a bad kid. He's put in three requests so far to have a room transfer, and nothing's happened yet. He put up a curtain in the room the other day."

Thrall frowned deeply. "He's the Headmistress' kid. Or foster kid or whatever they are. That doesn't..."

It didn't make sense, unless someone was doing it deliberately or something really weird was going on. He didn't know what to say about that, though, or whether it was any of his business.

Instead, he continued chopping vegetables, wondering if there was buttermilk and garlic to make some ranch dressing with. Or just bottled dressing. That would work too.

"Maybe the Headmistress thinks it's funny." Kazari stood in front of the oven and knelt to watch the bread toast. When it looks sufficiently golden, she pulled the pan out and started brushing her butter mixture onto the bread.
